Advances in Exposure prevention

AEP ceased publication as of volume 7, number 4, June 2005

From the Editors:

For over a decade, Advances in Exposure Prevention (AEP) was a leading source of information on the prevention of occupational exposures to bloodborne pathogens. We published exclusive research reports, widely used for benchmarking, from a national network of U.S. hospitals; tracked new sharps safety devices and exposure prevention technology; covered groundbreaking policy and legislative efforts in the U.S., culminating in the passage of the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act in 2000; and focused on the human dimension of occupational exposures by sharing accounts of occupationally infected healthcare workers.

After ten years, as of June 2005, we ceased publishing AEP.  Our decision to do this was influenced by several factors: a sense that AEP has served its purpose, and that our time might be better spent pursuing other goals and projects; a general shift in the Center's orientation towards international initiatives; and the vast increase in information and resources, both print- and web-based, on needlestick prevention and sharps safety over the last few years, spurred by the passage of the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act in 2000. One indication of this wealth of information is the long list of links on our "Links" page.

The publication of our book, Preventing Occuptional Exposures to Bloodborne Pathogens: Articles from Advances in Exposure Prevention, 1994-2003, represents the culmination of our work on AEP. The book collects in one volume over 25 EPINet data reports, personal accounts of occupationally infected healthcare workers, and other articles of interest that have been published in AEP over the last decade, including a section dealing with legislative and policy issues. You can also order back-issue sets of AEP. For pricing and further information, please e-mail us at epinet@virginia.edu, or call (434) 924-5159.

We are considering other ways of sharing the Center's information and research, perhaps through an electronic (e-mail) newsletter or articles on our website. Please continue to visit our website for updated information.

We are very grateful for our subscribers' support over the years, and wish our readers continued success in their efforts to reduce risk and improve safety for healthcare workers worldwide. Feel free to e-mail or call us with comments, questions or concerns.
