The University of Virginia Health System is home to some of the nation's most outstanding medical researchers. From basic laboratory science to clinical patient trials, our research community is filled with activity. Research At-A-Glance 

  • Our mission is to bring discoveries in the basic and clinical sciences from the laboratory to the patient bedside. 
  • Two of our basic science departments - cell biology and microbiology - rank among the top 5 nationally. Thirteen of our basic science and clinical departments rank among the top 30 nationally.
  • Our faculty have received national and international recognition for research, including the Howard Hughes, Flexner, Lasker, and MacArthur Genius Awards.
  • Both the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing have active and significant research programs that attract substantial support from the National Institutes of Health.
  • U.S. News & World Report ranks five of our medical specialties among "America's Best Hospitals". They are: endocrinology; gynecology; ear, nose, and throat; cancer; and heart.  The UVa Medical Center has been named one of the nation's Top 100 Hospitals seven times.
