Curriculum for the Research Training Program

Overview of Curriculum:

The mission of our broad-based interdisciplinary CAM research training program is:

  1. to improve the quality of training in research through expansion of our current emphasis to include CAM-relevant research; and

  2. to make a significant contribution to the preparation of cohorts of highly trained CAM researchers who will be prepared to address the many questions of efficacy, safety, and mechanism of action(s) that remain in the emerging field of CAM.

We offer coursework that encompasses a broad range of scientists who are interested in the mechanisms of human disease, therapeutic responsiveness, and mechanism(s) of action of selected CAM products. Our core curriculum includes an array of clinical research-related topics of interest. Trainees should select elective courses that will further enhance employment upon completion of the CAM research training.

Get sample plans of study and course descriptions ,including the frequency of the course offerings, the name(s) of faculty who are teaching each course, general statements about the course content, and the potential benefit for the CAM trainees.

Our overall curriculum to develop and nurture diverse, multidisciplinary trainees embarking on a career in CAM-related research remains highly flexible and lends itself to modification to meet the specific goals and objectives of individual trainees based upon focus and prior coursework and stage of development in the conduct of research.

An occasional postdoctoral trainee may choose to enroll in one of the two formal degree-granting programs offered by the Department of Health Evaluation Sciences (DHES). This 31-credit master of science program prepares health care professionals and others with an interest in health evaluation for a research career in clinical investigation and health services research. Core courses in the MS-HES program include biostatistics, epidemiology, and statistical computing and graphics, with specialty courses and electives in related areas. The MS-HES program will reserve a spot in each incoming class over the next three years for a postdoctoral trainee (post-MD or post PhD) in the CAM research training program who wishes to complete the master of science degree.
