John D. Arras, Ph.D. is Porterfield Professor of Biomedical Ethics and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia, where he directs the Undergraduate Bioethics Program and participates in the M.A. degree program in Bioethics. He is a Fellow and Board member of the Hastings Center and a former member of Governor Cuomo's New York State Task Force on Life and Law. Professor Arras is the editor (with Bonnie Steinbock and Alex London) of Ethical Issues in Modern Medicine, 6th ed. (forthcoming) and Bringing the Hospital Home: Ethical and Social Implications of High Technology Home Care (Johns Hopkins), and the author of numerous articles on bioethics, including "Pragmatism and Bioethics," "Physician-Assisted Suicide: A Tragic View," and "Nice Story, But So What? Narrative Justification in Ethics." His primary areas of research interest include global justice and international research, the ethics of physician-assisted suicide, reproductive ethics, and methodology/epistemology in practical ethics. He presently consults with both the CDC and NIH on ethical issues in research and recently served on the Board of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. Prior to coming to Virginia in 1995, he was for 14 years a professor of bioethics at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where (with Nancy Dubler) he co-founded one of the first clinical ethics consultation services in the U.S.; during those same years he was also Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at Barnard College, Columbia University, where he taught courses in bioethics and philosophy of law.
